An assessment of landscape in relation to 9 rural towns and villages

Matrix Partnership was appointed by Purbeck District Council to undertake a characterisation study of 9 principal towns and villages in the Purbeck area.  In view of the intimate association between settlements and the outstanding landscapes for which the Isle of Purback is renowned, the study included an assessment of rural landscapes and their relationship with and influence upon developed areas.

The study included an assessment of the character, morphology and topography of the landscapes that define the setting of each town or village including their influence on their form and materials as well as the association with patterns of movement, vegetation and views.

In this context, each settlement report includes an overall Townscape Analysis, and this was to be followed by a later analysis of the potential for future development that was informed by landscape and design issues.
