Urban design and feasibility study

This study identified a viable development strategy for knitting together the various needs of this World Heritage Site (WHS) area and creating a much more lively and convivial public realm. The initiative, led by Greenwich Council working alongside a steering group of stakeholder organizations was driven by the need to achieve sensitive upgrading of Cutty Sark Gardens public space in a way that would be complementary to the refurbished ship itself, whilst recognizing the need to generate sufficient development value to fund the public realm improvement works.

Inter-woven components included; establishing an attractive setting for major refurbishment of the Cutty Sark ship; improving pier facilities; and achieving better connections to the Greenwich University campus and Dockland Light Rail Station.

Mechanisms were established whereby a future revenue stream for the Cutty Sark ship help fund improved visitor facilities whilst providing a series of development opportunities to make the Gardens a much more vibrant part of Greenwich’s town centre.
