This Supplementary Planning Document has been prepared to support the APP aims that seek to ensure improvements in the design and quality of shop fronts, and by extension the wider streetscene.

The guidance will assist anyone commissioning or designing new or replacement shopfronts or the alteration of replacement of existing ones to ensure the highest quality in terms of:

- their relationship to both the local context and associated buildings;

- materials used;

- the level and means of illumination.

The Key Objectives of the appraisal are:

- To improve the town centre’s image and make it a more welcoming, attractive and memorable place to use and enjoy.

- To ensure that a thoughtful and coherent design approach based on an appreciation of local character and heritage and consideration of sustainability.

- To promote inclusive access.

In addition to detailed technical descriptions and recommendations of architectural elements guidance is provided on:

- Sun blinds and canopies;
- Security;
- Access considerations;
- Illumination;
- Additional fixtures (air conditioning units, satellite dishes etc);
• Shop signs and advertisements (including facia signs and lettering, projecting signs, window signs and pavements signs); and,
• Maintenance.
