Matrix Partnership formed part of a team appointed by RENEW North Staffordshire, the Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder body, to prepare an Area Regeneration Framework (ARF) for the northern area of Stoke-on-Trent, including Middleport, Burslem, Etruria Valley, Burslem Park and Smallthorne.

Urban analysis explored issues at both the overall macro scale as well as detailed issues affecting townscape and local character. Of particular note in North Stoke is how the overall urban pattern is strongly influenced by the legacy of the pottery industry; the distinct topography and the presence of the Trent and Mersey Canal.

A framework for regeneration is defined that is premised on facilitating a permanent solution to the problems of low demand and abandonment in the local housing market.
