The radial pattern of Belfast City has given rise to a series of distinct neighbourhoods that have developed alongside the main arterial routes. These routes are the lifeblood of the city and yet due to increased traffic levels, environmental malaise and changing socio-economic trends, depopulation has occurred and a spiral of decline set in.
Five Neighbourhood Regeneration Plans are combined to form a single strategy for regenerating East Belfast. A package of measures is defined for each neighbourhood, geared to facilitating economic competitiveness, tackling social exclusion, boosting the quality of the environment and promoting creativity.
A vision for each area is established, based on consultation with a range of stakeholders. This demonstrates the combined benefits of higher density development, and advocates a review of local authority standards relating to parking and the design and management of open spaces. A parallel programme of socio-economic initiatives is specified aimed at raising the city’s educational and skills base.
