The Diyaar Al Muharraq development in Bahrain involves reclaiming a site 6 kilometres by 4 kilometres from the Gulf. The project is split into four phases with Matrix Partnership’s work concerned with the design proposals for the reclamation contract let for phase1, a site 1.5 by 4 kilometres in extent and sub-divided by a complex of canals. The projected population of phase 1 is 50,000 and ultimately 200,000 for the project overall.
The project differs from other reclamation projects in the region, in that its objective is to create a mixed, balanced community and not an exclusive enclave for the rich. The phase 1 project includes a town centre, local centres, schools, open space, beaches, a marina, hotels and leisure facilities as well as a range of residential apartments and villas.
Our role has been to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to design and develop the masterplan, designing residential neighbourhoods, the town centre, the marina and beach areas.
