By the year 2011 the population of the Dublin Region is predicted to be in excess of 1.6 million, making it comparable to other European City Regions such as Glasgow/Edinburgh, Helsinki, the Oresund (Copenhagen/Malmo) or Lyon. The quality and structure of the proposed public transport network will play a significant role in shaping future development in the Greater Dublin Area.
Our work for the Dublin Transport Office looks at the emerging public transport infrastructure network of Greater Dublin (Platform for Change) and its influence on the traditional concept of station locations. Traditionally, stations stood apart from existing town centres with little connection to the surrounding neighbourhood, often dividing rather than integrating local communities. New approaches to the design and layout of station locations are proposed by the study, resulting in new transport nodes with high density associated development for both living and working. Guidance is provided on station buildings, their wider catchment area and movement connections. The study also explores integrated approaches to urban development in relation to station locations and integrated public transport.
