Working on behalf of Swan Country Homes, the practice has prepared detailed design proposals for redevelopment of a substantial town centre site in Chard, Somerset. The site is currently owned in part by Somerset County Council and by Air Control Industries who are seeking to relocate to new premises out of the town centre.
Proposals are underpinned by comprehensive analysis of the site and the surrounding area. This included a study of local character and distinctiveness.
Included within the site are two listed structures, one of which is a fine 19th Century brick mill. A mixed-use vision is put forward that includes apartments and town houses and a local community resource centre that includes a healthcare facility and foyer building.
The proposals represent a visionary approach to contemporary and sensitive town centre redevelopment. A fundamental feature is to ensure new interventions integrate closely into the physical and social fabric of the town centre and that they are sustainable, improve accessibility, enhance local character and address local needs, which at currently inadequately supported.
